Frequently Asked Questions

How is a private midwife different from public midwifery/MGP care?

Private midwifery care offers more personalised attention, with a dedicated midwife who will support you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and early postnatal period. In the public system, care may be provided by a rotating team of midwives, meaning you may not know who will attend your birth. Private midwives are not bound by non-evidence-based policies, and you have more control over your pregnancy and birth experience.

Do I need a referral from my GP before I can have care with a midwife?

No, you do not need a referral and can contact me directly as soon as you get a positive pregnancy test. In fact, you can bypass your GP altogether and get bloods, early ultrasounds and advice on your pregnancy straight from a midwife.

Can I have a private midwife and have my baby in hospital?

Yes. I have admitting rights at Westmead Public Hospital for women who would like to plan to give birth in hospital or who have conditions which make hospital the safest place to birth. If you would like to birth in a different public hospital, I can still provide antenatal and postnatal care, and be a support person during your labour in hospital. Women

Can I have private midwifery care without birth support – just for antenatal/postnatal care?

Yes! I offer services to women at all stages of their journey, whether that be for a one off issue in pregnancy or postnatally, complete antenatal care or a plan of extended postnatal care once you are discharged from hospital. Home Visits or Telehealth available.

Is private midwifery covered by Medicare?

Yes, Medicare does cover some of the costs associated with private midwifery services. There is currently no Medicare rebate for homebirth. Please reach out for more detailed information on fees.

What if I am too ‘high risk’ for homebirth?

If planning a homebirth isn’t the right choice for your circumstances, you can still benefit from continutity of midwifery care and plan a hospital birth. Please reach out to discuss with me.

Can I change my mind about where I give birth?

Yes. Whether you have been planning a hospital birth and now feel called to explore homebirth or the other way around, your midwife will follow your lead.

What if I need to transfer to a hospital during labour?

If complications arise during labour or birth that require a transfer to a hospital, we ensure that all medical information is transferred and that you receive continuous care. Your midwife will stay with you throughout the process to provide support, and we work closely with your local hospital to ensure a smooth transition.

How do I book an appointment with a midwife?

Booking an appointment is easy. Simply call me or fill out the contact form to schedule a friendly chat.

Can I switch from public to private midwifery care during pregnancy?

Yes, you can switch to private midwifery care at any point during your pregnancy. However, it’s best to make the switch as early as possible to ensure availability and continuity of care. I prefer that your care starts before 32 weeks to allow us time to get to know each other especially if planning a homebirth, but I have taken on clients at later gestations.
